White gelcoat tones differ slightly depending on the gelcoat manufacturer. Ashland’s NP 10015 and Reichhold’s NGA 8533 are very close in tone, but Reichhold’s tone is slightly more yellowish. If a boat made with Reichhold gelcoat is patched with Ashland gelcoat, the patch will appear a little lighter.
* RAL 9016 is slightly whiter than the original gelcoat shade, while RAL9010 is a slightly darker white.

The colour resistance of gelcoat surfaces is affected mostly by UV radiation from the sun. UV radiation is always high on the sea and lakes, so it will inevitably affect the surface colour and gloss of all boats over time. In addition to UV radiation, boat colours are affected by local air pollutants (from traffic, industrial emissions and soot) and the mechanical wear of surfaces by fenders and along access routes.
In order to minimise discolouration and maintain gloss, the most important steps are regular washing and waxing. To repair worn or faded surfaces, the first step is to carefully wash the boat and then apply cleaning waxes, after which the boat should be waxed again using a quality boat wax.
Discolouration caused by UV radiation, in particular, must be taken into account if the surface of the boat needs to be repaired, in which case the colour of the patch material must be adapted to the actual surface colour of the boat.
Gelcoat is a polyester-based gel-like coating used as the outermost layer of the boat’s reinforced plastic or fiberglass structures. During the manufacturing process, the gelcoat is sprayed or brushed into a mould before laminating the actual structure. Topcoat is a gelcoat with added paraffin that is used for boat repairs and painting by hand. The paraffin helps the topcoat dry when applied to the surface, as gelcoat dries only in an oxygen-free state against the mould.
